Dog-Friendly Landscaping Ideas for Your Backyard
Share Beautiful Space With Your Best Friend
Summer is a busy
time of year, especially when it comes to outdoor chores and yard maintenance.
As the days grow longer, there is always extra work to do to make your property
look well-groomed, clean, colorful and ultra green. Of course, homeowners with
pets might find this challenge to be quite daunting. After all, pets can do
damage to garden beds, outdoor cooling units, new grass growth, plants, mulch and
more. Yet, we love our furry friends too much to keep them out of our
backyards!
So, rather than continually
admonish our pets for the damage they can inflict on our outdoor space, we’ve
put together a list of 10 ways you can turn your landscaping into a
pet-friendly zone!
Our landscape
designers can implement any of the following options so you and your pet can spend
happily ever after enjoying your outdoor oasis—together.
- Install
a fence. Dogs need room
to roam and also need to learn their boundaries. Installing a fence will give
them a proper area to run, while also blocking off grassy spots where they’re
not as welcome.
- Consider
a new type of grass. Is
your pet always eating grass? Ask your landscaper about planting grass that is
safer for pets.
- Try
a sandbox. Install a
sandbox so your pup has his/her own place to dig rather than ravage through your
garden bed.
- Plant
safely. Plant dog-safe,
friendly plants and flowers such as marigolds, sage, cilantro, sunflowers,
zinnias and snapdragons. Ask your landscaper about additional pet-friendly
shrubs and flowers that might work in the garden.
- Go
chemical-free. Use
natural fertilizers and avoid chemical-based ones that can harm pets.
- Plant
a tree! Plant a tree that
will provide shade in your yard —so Fido has a shady place to rest rather than
lying in the cool topsoil or mulch in your garden.
- Add
some water. Ask your
landscaper to install a water feature such as a fountain, pond or even a dog
pool!
- Cover
up the dirt. Fill garden
beds with smooth stones or mulch to deter dogs from digging or lying in the
dirt.
- Create
a dog path. Install a dog
path or paver walkway where your dog walks or runs, rather than have him/her
wear a path in the grass.
- Say bye-bye to mud. Fix muddy yard areas by properly grading the area, installing turf or creating stone-filled garden beds.
