Caring for Your Winter Wonderland

How to Look After Your Property During the Snowy Season

When winter weather hits New Jersey, we know how tempting it can be to curl up under a blanket and ignore your landscaping until longer, warmer days return. But taking some time to care for your property during the colder months can make things easier when everything starts to thaw. While you may not need your grass mowed or gardens planted, there is still work that can be done! Keep lawn care on your winter to-do list, and you’ll thank yourself in the spring.

The Prep Before the Storm

If a storm is on the way, there are things you can do to help protect your yard from damage before the clouds roll in. If you find that autumn has left your lawn covered in leaves, you don’t need to get rid of them all—mulching them can recycle their nutrients into the ground. However, piles that are too wet and heavy can suffocate your lawn and should be raked and removed. Ignoring these matted leaves can also lead to snow mold, which thrives in areas under snow cover. Snow mold can leave discolored and slimy patches of grass after the snow has melted away.

Don’t forget to cover or remove any outdoor furniture that could be damaged by winter weather! Any other debris, as well as fire pit accessories or extra logs should also be removed. Cleaning everything up is a great first step to winter lawn maintenance.

Careful Where You Walk!

On the days you are out and about during the winter, be mindful of where you and your family are walking on your property. Frosts can weaken the grass of your lawn, so try to limit time spent walking across it.

Your yard isn’t the only thing to keep an eye on—don’t forget about your hardscaping, too! After winter storms, it’s important to remove ice and snow from paved or stone areas. For one thing, navigating slippery walkways can be dangerous for you, your family, and your pets! For another, ice and snow can damage your hardscaping by causing or worsening existing cracks in the pavement. Keep everything safe and beautiful by clearing off snow and ice soon after they fall. (And if you’re looking for assistance after a storm dumps snow on your business, we’re here to help!)
